Hello all,
My first post here, hoping someone will be able to shed some light on my problem. I have been the proud owner of a '98 V70R for about 6 months now, my concession to parenthood (no minivans here...). It needed a few things when I bought it, exhaust, driveshaft, a few other little things, but I figured while I'm at it, why not tune it a bit with an ecu re-map? So I sent it off to speedtuning (figured what I saved I could put in to a nicer exhaust- EST), but since I've had it back, it just hasn't been right, and before I send it back, I want to know if there's anything else I should look into. I had their "17psi" version done, figured I could always tune it down if I wanted to, but it has never been happy above maybe 14, and even to get it there, I had to plumb in a mbc in parallel with the bcs. Above 12ish, I get a CEL (P0243- wastegate solenoid A), but once it goes above 14 for more than a second or so, you get one big hesitation/shudder, the boost drops down to 8 or 9 and then things go back to normal. I attached a fuel pressure gauge, taped it to the windshield, and it didn't seem to drop with the shudder, but maybe it was happening too fast to catch it? We've replaced (my mechanic & I) all the hoses going to the bcs & mbc, checked the other ones around the turbo & intercooler (although not the intercooler itself yet), and all seem fine. We changed the cbv, tightened the wastegate a bit, cleaned the maf..... and nothing got rid of it. Could it just be a bad re-map? I assume that because I still get the CEL when the boost goes over 12 & the fact that with just the bcs I don't get much over stock would suggest that, maybe the fuel cut-off wasn't removed? Is there an ignition cut-off as well? Let me know your thoughts & suggestions please. |

where are you located? we can check your ECU if you are in the Bay Area.
did you do a stage 0 before you did the ECU? check ALL vacuum lines for cracks or brakes. one main thing i can think of at the top of my head is that they could have re-flashed the ECU with the wrong program, another year car perhaps. i would contact them and speak to one of there technicians, they could know what is going on or re-flash it for you. i wouldn't drive it like that anyways, sounds like that is the main problem if your car was running fine before you changed the ECU. Goodluck. |

I'm located north of the border, near Montreal, so about as far from the Bay Area as you can get while still staying on the continent... What would you be checking the ecu for, and how? Before I had it re-flashed it was running well, and still is, as long as I don't boost over 12-13 psi. But then, what's the fun? The fuel comsumption went up right away, from about 10.5L/100km to 12.5L/100km, so it's running richer, but again, if you're not getting any fun out of it (MORE BOOST!!!), you're just burning money. As for stage 0, I believe I did most of it, changed the plugs (NGK Iridiums), wires & MSD ignition coil, Amsoil all around, EST drop-in air filter, didn't change ALL the hoses, but most of the vacuum ones, the IC ones looked fine, put a couple of fuel injector cleaners in the tank & ran 94 octane, cleaned the PVC system & MAF, didn't change the O2 sensor, & installed a boost gauge. Anything I'm overlooking there? They offered to take it back & check & re-flash it, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything on my end.

sounds like you have done everything that I would have done. the ECU controls the Air/Fuel and that seems off to me as well, thats why im thinking that the re-flash is the problem. if it is not that then the only thing else would be the actual turbo itself. I am in no way a turbo expert! but i would have it checked for shaft play, maybe a spun barring something is keeping the turbo from delivering the amount of air needed to run smooth. OR check the valves for blow-by, might be leaking thure a piston ring.
Goodluck! |

Swapping out the plugs for some stock ones wouldn't be too long or hard, my garage must have some of those laying around. I thought about re-gapping them to a smaller gap, maybe they're getting blown out? Hey, I'm around Montreal too...

Has anyone out there had a good/ bad/ ANY experience with a speedtuning chip?

I don't know about the RICA, but I'm pretty sure the PPC doesn't work on '98s. I looked into the ecu from BSR, but wasn't crazy about having to send it to Sweden & the delay it would entail. However, with hindsight...

However, with hindsight... ALL 98s and earlier are an actual chip/ECU replacements, no flashing until the ME7 cars came out |
